Sophia Gray (1814 –1871) was the first woman to practise architecture in South Africa and one of the earliest in the world.

Married to Robert Gray, inaugural Anglican Bishop of Cape Town, Sophy devoted herself to the diocese, conducting the finances, organising and recording synods, and
maintaining the chronicles. By cart or wagon or on horseback, she accompanied her husband on all but two of his visitations throughout the country, sketching wherever they went. Her highly accomplished drawings and insightful diaries are held in the William Cullen Library of the University of the Witwatersrand.

Sophy was active in architecture over a period of twenty-two years, from 1848 – 1870, during which time she built fifty-two churches throughout South Africa, mostly Gothic
Revival, and she is deemed to have been the first architect, male or female, to have been professionally active in the Free State. However, the remarkable thing is that Sophy had no training at all – she was self-taught, having learnt architecture only from observation.

As a tribute to her achievements, the University of the free state instituted the annual sophia Gray Memorial lecture and
There s a lot of confusion on this point – does he only prepare a plan or the whole set of drawings, does he have to visit the site and how often, does he check the quality of the Contractor’s work, does he check the contractor’s bills etc.

WHAT ARE THE SERVICES RENDERED BY AN ARCHITECT

Once the Client has appointed an Architect, he can expect the following Services from an Architect.

CLIENTS BRIEF:

The Architect ascertains the Client’s requirements of the project, like its appearance, financial budget and time frame.

He prepares in agreement with the Client, a programme of his requirements.

He visits the Site and examines the site constraints, potential and the surrounding environment.

He examines the Codes, Legislation and standards as they affect the project.

CONCEPT DESIGN

The Architect prepares a report on site evaluation, state of existing buildings, if any; and analysis and impact of proposed development on the immediate environment.

He obtains from the Client or gets a detailed topographical survey of the site, prepared at the Clients expense. This survey shall include all the necessary data related to the existing structure, existing public utility lines, trees, pavements, roads, restrictions, easements and boundaries.

He obtains from the Client or gets soil tests, site borings or such other tests on sub-soil conditions done at the Clients expense.

He prepares conceptual designs to explain his understanding of the Client’s requirements.

He prepares a rough estimate of the cost of the project on the basis of the area. Under no circumstance does the Architect guarantee such estimate of cost.

PRELIMINARY DESIGN AND DRAWING:

The Architect modifies the conceptual designs incorporating required changes.

He prepares the preliminary drawings, sketches, study model etc., for the Client’s approval.

He prepares a preliminary estimate of cost on the basis of the area.

DRAWINGS FOR CLIENTS / STATUTORY APPROVALS:

He prepares Working Drawings, Specifications and Schedule of Quantities sufficient to prepare an Estimate of Cost (in consultation with his consultants).

He advises the Client and gets approval on the form of Contract and method of placing the Contract.

He prepares a short list of suitable Contractors with appropriate justification.

He prepares Tender drawings including large scale details and Tender documents including mode of measurement, method of payments, quality control procedures and other Conditions of Contract, to describe the whole project adequately for the purpose of placing the main Contract.

APPOINTMENT OF CONTRACTORS:

The Architect invites, receives and analyses Tenders.

He advises the Client on the appointment of the Contractor.

Entries are open for The Loerie Awards Architecture & Interior Design category. This category encompasses all retail, corporate, restaurant, museum, gallery and show stand entries which contribute to brand equity.

The entry deadline has been extended to 14 June – all new Architectural and Interior Design work that has been completed between 1 June 2009 – 14 June 2010 is eligible for entry, including new additions to an existing structure or brand, e.g. a new store, restaurant, or upgrade. You can still avoid the 5% late fee by submitting your work by 31 May. Entries are welcome from Africa and the Middle East, including the island states off the African Coast, e.g. Mauritius, Seychelles.

The Architecture & Interior Design category strengthens year on year to showcase some of the most innovative work in our region. In 2009, the elusive Loerie Grand Prix was awarded for the Foxp2 offices. In 2008, a Grand Prix was received by Trigger for the Nike Be True pop-up store and a Gold was awarded to GAPP Architects & Urban Designers for Freedom Park. In 2007, a Gold was also received by GAPP Architects and Urban Designers in association with MMA Architects for Maropeng Visitor’s Attraction, Cradle of Humankind. Silver and Bronze Loeries have also been scooped over the years.

A special extension until 13 July has also been announced for World Cup related entries. Work should be in one way or another related to the hosting of the World Cup in South Africa this year, and is not limited to official World Cup communication. Eligible entries can be launched up to 13 July and all entries must be received no later than this date. Although this extension has been granted, all entries received after 31 May will be liable for the 5% late fee.

The awards ceremony will take place during the Festival Weekend in Cape Town from 1 -3 October 2010. Tickets and accommodation bookings are now open, visit the Loeries website for more details (www.theloerieawards.co.za). Full entry information is also available on the website, including categories, entry guidelines and preparations instructions.
